Guitar Condition Report
Guitars History
This is a guitar thats been loved and played well and is a first edition model from the 1989. This guitar is ideal for the collector who wants the feel and sound of the very best Ibanez Jems without worrying about making a pick scratch. A guitar that is full of character, history and nostalgia. All of the marks on this guitar are superficial and include a few ding/dents around the outer edge. A few 1mm size impacts on the face and a few scratches, probably from a belt buckle on the rear. There are a number of pictures highlighting the dinks. This guitar shines where it matter, awesome playability, no neck pocket cracks or any wood stress marks which is a rare thing in a vintage Ibanez. One of the highlights of this guitar is the absolutely beautiful grain of the neck. Every now and then you get a fantastic piece of wood thats been lovingly shaped into the Jem neck profile and this one has a beautiful grain! It is also worth noting that the truss rod cover is not the original but these can be purchased relatively cheaply to finish off this instrument.
Condition: Fit and Finish
This is a player condition 777VBK with original hard case. The guitar has a fantastic feel, the neck has a grain to die for and feels exceptional in the hand and hard ware throughout is in good condition. Whilst playability is perfect there are a few blemishes mentioned in the report below along with a number of HD close up pictures to give you a clear idea of the superficial marks.
Fret Life/Fretboard - Fret-life is still strong with plenty of life left in them. No issues with the frets or fretboard, its a guitar built to be played.
Tremolo - A solid example with some wear and tarnish expected of a guitar that has been played but by no means is this in a bad condition. I't has been well taken care of. Take a look at the close up pictures to ascertain exact condition.
Neck - What a grain on the neck of this thing! Absolutely stunning to see and hold. Original Neck Straight as an arrow with an incredible feel and grain. No cracks or wood problems. These old guitars can sometimes have issue with the nut end causing a crack but this guitar is solid and shows no stress marks in this area.
Electronics - Sounds like a dream and these pick ups absolutely scream! You will not believe the power of PAF pros if you haven't heard them before!
Body work- Black is deep, green is vibrant. There is no evidence of fading . There are a number of dings around the outside edges and these have been highlighted on the pictures. There are lighter marks on the faces both front and rear but none are significant with no paint chips where it matters.
Case - This guitar comes with the the original 1989 hard Case in functioning order, all latches working. A few cracks in the corner and around the feet (photographed) show this has been used well but still protects the guitar and functions fine, some marks from old stickers, inside the case is in almost perfect condition. Only a few signs of ware from storage, minimal marking. all elements functional.

IBANEZ JEM 777VBK INFORMATION
- JEM777VBK - vine inlay, Black, American Basswood body (years of production 1988 - 1992)
The Ibanez JEM777 is the oldest Jem model having been developed back in 1985 and released in 1987 by the merged powers of Steve Vai and Ibanez whilst he was shopping around for a company fitting enough to bring the vision of the Jem into reality. Three different models were produced each labeled as the JEM777DY, JEM777SK, and JEM777LNG, with the color being the only real difference between them, each colored Desert Sun Yellow, Shocking Pink, and Loch Ness Green respectively.
The 777LNG was the first produced of all 777 Jems and only 777 exist each of which was numbered and signed by Steve Vai himself. The numbers produced of the yellow and pink guitars are unknown, but for what it’s worth the pink was produced from 1987 up to 1987 and the yellow from 87 all the way up to 1996. The original 777 models featured a basswood body with a maple neck and fretboard and had an Edge tremolo and DiMarzio PAF Pro pickups. The inlays were also originally pyramids that gradually depleted as they went higher up on the neck.
In 1988 a new black model was introduced which was overall the same save for the inclusion of a rosewood fretboard and the introduction of the now standard vine inlay. The black 777VBK ran until 1992. In 1989 two new models were introduced, or rather to new variations of older models. The 777DY and 777SK models were re released as the 777VDY and 777VSK with the rosewood fretboard and vine inlay, and while the pink didn’t linger past 1989 the yellow lasted up until 1991. It’s also worth mentioning the 777VDY and 777VSK featured Ibanez’s Wizard neck where the other models had thicker necks.
Also, since we’re on the topic, the 777VSK was manufactured, but not for a USA release due to a tendency for the pink paint used to fade. That would be the dictating reason why the pink models did not last past 1989.
These days the 777 line is among the most collectible guitars out there. It’s pretty infrequent, but every so often you can catch them on EBay for a substantially high price, and even more rare and proportionately more pricey you can find a Loch Ness Green JEM777. In fact that’s pretty much how this article began. A year ago Jameson actually spotted one and wrote this article. I’m just updating it now because having dead auction links crammed in single paragraph articles tend to look stupid. But you know what doesn’t look stupid? JEM777 guitars. At least if you’re into neon pink they don’t… and if you dig handle grips built into the body.
